Type of venue

Unmistakable with its warm beige façade, the Georgian National Opera & Ballet Theatre stands out as a landmark in the heart of Tbilisi.
With its oriental-inspired architecture, the State Theatre is a vibrant feature of the cityscape and one of the most important cultural centres in Georgia. Originally built in 1851, the building is one of the oldest opera houses in Eastern Europe and was once known as the “Imperial Theatre Tiflis.”
To meet the highest technical standards, the theatre underwent a comprehensive renovation. Waagner-Biro Stage Systems was selected to modernise the upper and lower stage machinery as well as the side stage equipment. The upper machinery included 47 fly bar hoists, 2 proscenium flys, 1 harlequin fly, and 8 point hoists. At the side stage, Waagner-Biro Stage Systems installed 4 assembly cranes per side, 1 storage telescopic hoist, 1 storage chain hoist and 2 chain hoists for line arrays. The lower stage machinery was also upgraded with 4 double-deck platforms, 3 transport elevators, and 12 side stage wagon pinion drives. All systems are seamlessly operated via the C⋅A⋅T V4 control system.
The renovation was celebrated with a grand reopening at the end of January 2016.
