To host the 2009 World Handball Championship, the city of Zagreb completed the construction of a state-of-the-art multifunctional arena within just 15 months.

Opened in time for the finals, the venue has since established itself as one of the most versatile and modern arenas in the region.

At the heart of the venue is a retractable and multifunctional spectator seating system, designed and installed by Waagner-Biro Stage Systems. This system offers flexible, high-capacity seating options: of the total 15,000 to 20,000 seats, approximately 4,500 are installed on retractable platforms developed by Waagner-Biro Stage Systems.

Adaptability was a key priority. Thanks to the dynamic configuration options, the arena can easily be transformed to host a wide range of events – from international sporting competitions and large-scale concerts to conferences and corporate events. Waagner-Biro Stage Systems. overcame architectural and ergonomic challenges, integrating specially designed folding seats into the grandstand system to meet both technical and design requirements.

A further challenge was the installation of massive retractable seating blocks over 8.5 metres high and 26 rows deep. The inclusion of transverse aisles allows for intermediate positioning. The core seating units – each 60 metres long – can be smoothly extended or retracted along the arena’s side walls, ensuring maximum flexibility for any event format.
